Why I hate the NFL Pre-Season Games
Best Online Sports Betting Reddit
The 2014 pre-season NFL schedule kicked off Sunday night in Canton, Ohio between the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills in the annual Hall of Fame game. The Giants emerged with a 17-13 victory, led almost exclusively by backups, rookies and either undrafted free agents or roster hopefuls. QB Ryan Nassib looked sharp directing the offense while rookie RB Andre Williams, the nation’s leading rusher last season out of Boston College, gained 48 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. New York’s ground game was woeful in the 2013 season, and Williams’ performance gives head coach Tom Coughlin optimism that the Giants’ 2014 running attack will bounce back. Both expected starting QBs, Eli Manning of the Giants and EJ Manual for the Bills saw very limited duty.
Six games are slated for this Thursday, with the showcase contest being a Super Bowl rematch between the reigning champion Seattle Seahawks visiting the Broncos in Denver. Other games certain to draw attention include New England at Washington and San Francisco at Baltimore. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden will be making his debut as he attempts to turn the ‘Skins around. On Friday, six more pre-season games are scheduled, with the most attention probably going to Buffalo-Carolina, Philadelphia-Chicago and New Orleans at St. Louis. Four games will take place on Saturday, with Cleveland visiting Detroit undoubtedly the most-anticipated matchup due to the presence of Cleveland’s Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football, who’ll be making his first appearance for the Browns. Manziel isn’t expected to be starting, but he’s expected to see plenty of game time.
Overall No. 1 draft pick Jadeveon Clowney (DE/LB) will make his NFL debut for the Houston Texans as they travel to Arizona. Former Atlanta and Philadelphia QB Michael Vick is expected to get plenty of time against Indianapolis, and the Panthers are eager to see how their entirely new group of receivers will perform as Carolina opens at home against Buffalo.
In Week 2, the pre-season schedule contains several “must-see” matchups. Some of the more anticipated include Philadelphia at New England on August 15th, Baltimore at Dallas and Miami at Tampa Bay on the 16th, Denver at San Francisco on the 17th, and Cleveland at Washington on Monday night the 18th. Many of the third week of pre-season games feature geographical “rivals” that include contests between Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, the Giants and the Jets, and Washington at Baltimore.
The 2014 pre-season schedule concludes on August 27 with a full slate of contests (all 32 teams) as final roster decisions are made in preparation for the opening of the regular season which officially kicks off on Thursday, September 4th with the Green Bay Packers traveling to Seattle to take on the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks.
